13 Fun Things to do in San Antonio

Will you be in San Antonio with time on your hands before or after ASHA’s conference? Here are some events and attractions you might like to know about. Just be sure and consult the conference program book, before you buy tickets – you don’t want to miss a chance to connect with your ASHA colleagues, or take part in a great session or workshop!

Special Events 

  1. Art in the Garden: Scenic Botanical Gardens with many plants native to the area.
  2. Made in Texas: An exhibit focusing on Texas products and ideas that have impacted the world.
  3. Institute of Texan Cultures: The Institute of Texan Cultures invites you to discover Texas through its educational tours and programs.
  4. Comedian Joan Rivieras Comedy Open Mic: One of San Antonio’s leading social entertainers will make you laugh at the Historic Bonham Exchange.
  5. FOTOSEPTIEMBRE USA 2012: Instituto Cultural de México showcasing a variety of national photographers work. 
  6. Our Town: Performing Arts College  presents this timeless drama set in the mythical village of Grove’s Corners.
  7. pARTy at SAMA: Come to enjoy art, cocktails and music inspired by Aphrodite and the Gods of Love.
  8.  Oktoberfest San Antonio: German  food and drink, music and dancing will put you in the spirit.
  9. Monster-Con: Its a B-Movie Monster themed, Halloween party!

Historic Sites of San Antonio:

  1. No stay in San Antonio is complete without a visit to The Alamo – located at 300 Alamo Plaza just a ½ mile (approximately 10 minute walk) from the Crowne Plaza.
  2. Visit the “Queen of the Missions” Mission San Jose – located at 6701 San Jose Drive just 5 miles (approximately 15 minute cab ride) from the Crowne Plaza. The San Jose Mission was established in 1720. Here you will experience the social and cultural beginnings of San Antonio.
  3. Interested in the paranormal and need additional accommodations during your stay in San Antonio? Visit the Historic Menger Hotel – located at 204 Alamo Plaza just over a ½ mile (approximately 15 minute walk) from the Crowne Plaza. The Menger Hotel was opened in 1859. This historic hotel is noted for its resident ghosts, perhaps you will sight one or two during your visit.
  4. Calling all spelunkers…a trip to Natural Bridge Caverns is a must – located 30 miles north of downtown San Antonio (approximately 40 minute cab ride). This is a great family-friendly outing. Here you can experience one of the premier natural attractions the state of Texas has to offer as well as zip line and tower climb.
