The quality and content of comprehensive sexuality education varies greatly depending on the state, district, school and even teacher. Four leading national health and education organizations along with Advocates for Youth, Answer and SIECUS, have released the National Sexuality Education Standards: Core Content and Skill K-12 in January 2012. This webinar will provide the background, rationale and process by which the Standards were created and strategies for adoption and implementation for educational and health professionals working on the front lines of sexuality education nationwide.

Presenter Nora Gelperin, M.Ed., is one of the most well-respected sexuality educators and trainers in the U.S. She has 18 years of experience developing and conducting workshops for education professionals nationwide and oversees Answer’s Sexuality Education Training Initiative, including the annual Training Institute in Sexual Health Education (TISHE) and Answer’s three dynamic online workshops: “Sexuality ABCs (Abstinence, Birth Control and Condoms),” “STD Basics” and most recently “LGBTQ Issues in School.” Ms. Gelperin has been recognized for her expertise in the field with a Mary Lee Tatum Award from the Association of Planned Parenthood Leaders in Education and a Health Teacher of the Year award by New Jersey AHPERD. She has taught at Temple University, Montclair State University and St. Peter’s College and serves on the executive council for the Society of State Leaders in Health and Physical Education.

By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the main building blocks of the process by which the National Sexuality Education Standards were created.
  2. List the seven key topics and four grade level clusters that scaffold the National Sexuality Education Standards.
  3. Compare and contrast the content of the National Sexuality Education Standards with their own state’s sexuality education requirements, if any exist.
